Youghal Lighthouse, together with the accompanying lighthouse keeper’s house overlooks the beautiful Youghal Bay at the mouth of the Blackwater. Situated on the south coast of Ireland overlooking the cliffs near the holiday and fishing town of Youghal the lighthouse has stood for over 167 years.
Johnstone’s Trade were approached by the Commissioners of Irish Lights to improve the condition of the walls and the railings as the structure indicated that it had not been painted for a number of years. Decorator, Tommy Flanagan, said: “Johnstone’s Trades range of masonry paints were the most suitable for this kind of project”.
The products that were specified for the project included Johnstone’s Stormshield Pliolite Masonry, a solvent based paint that was applied on the exterior walls of the lighthouse to provide a smooth matt finish in Brilliant White.
The Pliolite Masonry formulation is specifically formulated to give excellent adhesion to difficult surfaces as well as being enhanced with additional resins which improve performance against the tough weather conditions, meaning it was the ideal product for a location so exposed to and at risk from the elements. It can also be applied in temperatures as low as -5oC and is rain resistant within 20 minutes of application.
To complete the makeover, the metal railings of the lighthouse were painted in Johnstone’s Steel & Cladding Semi-gloss Top coat in Signal red. Due to its coastal location, metal surfaces in particular are subject to heavy rusting and breakdown as a consequence of exposure to salt from the atmosphere.
The Lighthouse has now been restored and the exterior structure of the building will be protected from any further damage thanks to the help of Johnstone’s Trade.
